Public records, found, and explained

Every week, Canadian and US governments release a myriad of documents that most people never see. Some come out because a reporter, a researcher or an ordinary citizen asked for them under Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP), Freedom of Information (FOI) or Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) law. Others are quietly published in government reading rooms. Most go unread.

This blog reads them. Each post picks a few recent releases, some we've asked for and many requested by others, and explains what they show, why they matter and what is still being withheld. Every post links to the original record, and every requester gets credit.

We are not here to tell you what to think. We are here to put the paper trail in front of you, plainly, so you can judge for yourself.

New posts most weeks, starting with the first edition, "Released this week."
